Who was Roy Cazaly?

Roy Cazaly, Australian Rules Football legend was Lynne Cazaly’s
great great uncle. He started playing league football in 1911 for
St Kilda and was traded to South Melbourne (now the Sydney
Swans) in 1921. He coached the Swans, topped their goal kicking
and won best and fairest.

And the ‘Up There Cazaly’ cheer was inspired by his ability to take
fingertip marks and complete almost aerobatic performances.
His teammates would shout ‘Up There Cazaly’ to encourage him
to go for some of the most incredible marks.

He later coached the Swans after being wooed back from retirement.
He played league football until he was 48 years of age!

Roy was also responsible for changing Hawthorn’s nickname from
the tame ‘Mayblooms’ to the more powerful ‘Hawks’.
